Patio & Driveway Installation

The visible surface is only one part of a patio or driveway. Excavation, the sub-base, drainage, falls, edges and joints all need to suit the site, the property and the way the finished area will be used every day.

What installation includes

We begin by measuring the area and checking access, existing levels, drainage and nearby buildings. Old surfaces and unsuitable ground are removed to the required depth. A compacted sub-base is installed, falls are set to move water safely, and drainage channels, soakaways or permeable construction are considered where needed.

Patios can include paths, steps, raised terraces and retaining features so that the finished space connects naturally with doors, lawns and borders. Driveway work includes stable edge restraints and a build-up suitable for vehicles, rather than treating the surface like a garden path.

Choosing a surface

Indian sandstone has natural variation and suits many traditional gardens. Porcelain gives a crisp, consistent surface and is straightforward to maintain. Limestone and Cotswold tones can create a softer appearance. For driveways, block paving is durable and repairable, gravel is permeable and cost-conscious, and resin-bound finishes create a smooth modern surface when the full build-up is suitable.

The right answer depends on the property, traffic, shade, maintenance expectations and budget. Materials can be viewed through the Rainbow Landscaping Centre in Kirton, where paving and aggregates are available alongside other landscape supplies.

Process and cost factors

After the initial visit, you receive a written quote covering the agreed preparation, drainage, edging and surface. Once work starts, the ground is excavated, the base is built and compacted, drainage is installed, and the chosen finish is laid and jointed. The site is cleared when the installation is complete.

Cost changes with area, access, excavation depth, ground conditions, drainage, levels, retaining work and the selected material. A modest patio may start in the low thousands, but an accurate figure needs a site visit. Proper base and drainage work should not be removed simply to make the visible finish cheaper, because failures usually begin underneath.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the sub-base important?

It spreads loads and gives the surface a stable foundation. Insufficient excavation or compaction can lead to movement, ruts and uneven paving.

How is rainwater managed?

We set appropriate falls and may use channels, soakaways or permeable construction according to the site and surface.

Can I compare materials before deciding?

Yes. Paving and aggregates can be viewed at the Rainbow Landscaping Centre in Kirton, and we explain the practical differences during the visit.

What affects the final price?

Area, access, excavation, ground conditions, levels, drainage, edging and material choice all affect the written quote.
